Yogyakarta, Indonesia

EECSI 2026 Venue

Yogyakarta (Javanese: ꦔꦪꦺꦴꦒꦾꦏꦂꦠ), officially a Special Region in Indonesia, is the capital of the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the cultural heart of Java, where tradition and modern life blend under the symbolic rule of the Sultan. As the only Indonesian royal city still governed by a monarchy, it preserves Javanese heritage through the Kraton and classical arts such as batik, gamelan, wayang kulit, ballet, literature, poetry, silversmithing, and visual arts.

Known as the “City of Students,” Yogyakarta hosts a large student population and many universities, including Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Gadjah Mada, the nation’s largest and most prestigious. Historically, Yogyakarta served as Indonesia’s capital from 1946 to 1948 during the National Revolution, while its Kota district was once the seat of the Mataram Sultanate. Its proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites like Borobudur Temple—the world’s largest Buddhist temple—and Prambanan, a grand Hindu temple complex, strengthens its global tourism appeal, alongside attractions such as Malioboro Street and the signature dish gudeg. With about 375,699 residents in 2023 and a metropolitan area of over 4 million, Yogyakarta also records Indonesia’s highest Human Development Index (0.887), making it a vibrant center of education, culture, and spirituality.
